Factory Numbers
How to read the serial numbers on a 1956 Ford Automobile. Ford's coding system for serial numbers can be broken down, as follows, the first symbol designates the engine type. (A) 223-cid six cylinder, (M) 292-cid V-8, (P) 312-cid, (U) 272-cid V-8. The second symbol designates the model year '6' is for 1956. The third symbol desgnates the final assembly plant, A = Atlanta, B = Buffalo, C = Chester, D = Dallas, G = Chicago, F = Dearborn, E = Mahwah, H = Highland Park, K= Kanas City, L = Long Beach, M = Memphis, N = Norfolk, R = San Jose, S = Somerville, U = Louisville, P = Twin City (St. Paul). The fourth symbol designates body type, as follows C = Sunliner, F = Victoria (Fairlane 4-dr), R = Customline Ranch Wagon, W = Crown Victoria, X = Country Sedan, V = Victoria (2-dr Sedans), T = Fairlane (2-dr & 4-dr), Y = Country Squire, G = Mainline & Customline (2-dr & 4dr). The fifth through tenth numbers indicate the number of the unit built at each assembly plant, begining with 100001.
