Frazer Motor Cars
1949
For the 1949 model year serveral minor changes were made in the Frazer, principally in the manor of trimming. The hood escutcheon or crest was lower to a position just above the new grille and the name "Frazer" in block letters, was on the grille. A wider chrome strip was lined under the doors and new taillights were surounded by a chromed casting. The grille was made into a massive eggcrate-type with both horizontal and vertical bars. The previously optional 112-hp engine was now standard equipment in both the Standard and the Manhattan lines. For 1949 only about half as many Frazers were built and sold as there were in the previous year. By 1949, most other auto manufactures also had new postwar body designs and Kaiser and Frazer sales fell sharply in the face of this new competition. The Frazer Manhattan lineup now included a four-door sedan and a four-door convertible sedan. Both had distinctive, twin molding lower bodyside strips fashioned of bright metal. The bottom strip was narrower than the upperband which decorated the bottoms of the doors (plus all body panels on the same trim level) between the front and rear wheel openings. Despite its attractive and unique body styling, the four-door convertible sedan remained a rarity with just 62 examples being built. The 1949 Frazers were intorduced in September 1948 and the Manhattan convertible appeared in dealer showrooms in January 1949. Model year production peaked at 24,923 units. Calendar year production of 60,405 cars was recorded, including Kaisers. Towards the end of 1949 Joseph Frazer left the company bearing his own name Kaiser-Frazer, in the end this would be the begining of the end of the Frazer Motor Car Division.
