1951 Packard would introduce a completely fresh new body style to its automobile line. Introduction of the 1951 Packards in the 200, 200 Deluxe, 300 and the Patrician 400 series began in August 1950. The Packard 250 Line with the convertible and hardtop was added in March 1951. On Oct.12,1950 the Society of Motion Picure Art Directors proclaimed the 24th Series Packard as " The most beautiful car of the year." The midyear two-door hardtop acquired the name Mayfair after it's release. An experimental Phantom II sports car was constructed for Packard design chief Ed Macauley, based on a highly-modified Club Sedan. It featured a long, wide hood scoop, ebbed bright metal underscores, similarly ribbed fender skirts, Constoom concentric circle wheel discs, hardtop coupe styling and a two person seating. A Packard 200 touring sedan exhibited average fuel consumption of 22.023 mpg while participating in the Mobilgas Economy Run. This was better than 12 other entries in the same class. A total of 100,132 Packards were supplied to buyers during the 1951 model run. Calender year totals were counted at 76,075 cars, good for 16th position on industry sales charts.
