Welcome to the American Cars.

1957
The 1957 Fords were completely restyled and bore only slight resemblance to previous years. The new Fairlane series (including Fairlane and Fairlane 500 models) was five inches lower, had a two and one half longer wheel base and measured more then nince inches longer overall compared to 1956 models. The Custom series (including Custom and Custom 300 models) was three inches longer overall and had a one-half inche longer wheelbase than the 1956 models. As an aid in lowering the cars, all models had 14 inche wheels for the first time. Other design changes included a rear opening hood, streamlined wheel openings and the use of windshield posts that sloped rearward at the bottom. Also, all 1957 Fords sported the latest styling craze, tailfins. Ford refered to these as "high-canted fenders." The big news for the year was the introduction of the Skyliner, the only true hardtop convertible in the world. At a touvch of a button, an automatic folding mechanism retracted the top into the trunk, creating a true convertible. This would be the last year for the two-seater Thunderbird.
