How to read the serial numbers on a 1957 Ford Automobile. Ford's coding system for serial numbers can be broken down, as follows, the first symbol designates the engine type. (A) 223-cid six cylinder, (B) 272-cid V-8,(C) 292-cid V-8, (D) 312-cid V-8 (with four-barrel carb), (E) 312-cid V-8 (with dual four-barrel carbs), (F) 312-cid supercharged V-8, The second symbol designates the model year '7' is for 1957. The third symbol desgnates the final assembly plant, A = Atlanta, B = Buffalo, C = Chester, D = Dallas, G = Chicago, F = Dearborn, E = Mahwah, H = Highland Park, K= Kanas City, L = Long Beach, M = Memphis, N = Norfolk, R = San Jose, S = Somerville, U = Louisville, P = Twin City (St. Paul). The fourth symbol designates body type, as follows C = Fairlane 500 convertible, G = Custom/Custom 300 (2-dr & 4-dr), R = Custom Ranch Wagon 300, W = Fairlane 500 retractable hardtop = Country Sedan, V = Fairlane /Fairlane 500/Victoria (2-dr ), T = Fairlane /Fairlane 500(2-dr & 4-dr), Y = Country Squire. The fifth through tenth numbers indicate the number of the unit built at each assembly plant, begining with 100001.
